Since 1998, the SOGC has been active internationally. The Society is committed to promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights globally with a focus on safe motherhood and newborn health. It is our goal to ensure that every woman has the right to survive pregnancy and childbirth and has access to the care she needs to deliver a healthy baby through a safe pregnancy and childbirth.
The Ghislaine Franceour Fund for Midwifery and Midwifery Education in Haiti
In partnership with the Canadian Association of Midwives, the Ghislaine Francoeur fund has been created and is dedicated to midwifery and midwifery education in Haiti. Ghislaine Francoeur was the founding Director of the Ecole Nationale d’ Infirmieres Sages-Femmes in Haiti where she dedicated her time to educating midwives who would make a difference in her country. The maternal and infant mortality rates in Haiti are the highest in the Western Hemisphere and this fund is dedicated to providing funding that will support midwifery and/or midwifery education projects in Haiti.
The Society of Gynecologic Oncologists of Canada
International Health Program Scholarships
The Society of Gynecologic Oncologists of Canada (GOC) is a national specialty society incorporated in 1980. Gynecologic oncology is both a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology and is a surgical oncology specialty. Physicians in this specialty care primarily for patients with ovarian, uterine, and cervical cancer. It is a specialty that spans all facets of oncology including cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care. In Canada, gynecologic oncology medical care is primarily provided by physicians associated with regional cancer centres and universities in all the provinces. GOC is the national organization that brings all these doctors from across Canada together two to three times a year to present research as well as to develop clinical guidelines for patient care.
The GOC offers $5,000 scholarships to doctors from low-resource countries. These scholarships allow the doctors to attend the SOGC and GOC annual general meetings and to spend 2-4 weeks as observers at a Canadian gynecologic oncology centre. The $5,000 covers transportation and living expenses for their time in Canada.
Dr. André Lalonde Permanent Endowment Fund
Originally established by distinguished physician Dr. André Lalonde in memory of his parents, this fund is now supported by the SOGC and will be fully capitalized by 2012. Currently it supports an annual guest lectureship for an expert physician from a low-resource country at the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada’s Annual Clinical Meeting. In the future, it will promote knowledge of and interest in international women’s health issues among Canadian obstetricians and gynaecologists in many other ways. For example, it may offer an annual fellowship for a mid-career professional obstetrician or gynaecologist from Canada to work in a low-resource country. Other activities will be as identified from time to time by the CFWH Board of Directors on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee.
